The Rangers of the Way gather in Tanaris, to learn the sly ways of Trolls in preparation for their return to the East. In the ancient city of Zul'Farrak they find a few Hakkari trolls among the Sandfury. They rescue some prisoners awaiting sacrifice, one of whom turns out to be a Zandalari troll. None of the prisoners live long.
Meanwhile, a watch is kept on the Dream Portals in Ashenvale and Feralas.

Troubled by their experiences, Celegil, Aldrannath and Salabadon meet to talk about the Dragon of Nightmare they had slain. Joined by a number of bystanders, the group asks Keeper Remulos for advice. He in turn takes them to the lake where Malfurion Stormrage talks with the Keeper. After this event, still shaken from Malfurion's appearance, they agree to meet in Ratchet within two days.

Following their concerns about the apparent links between the Hakkari trolls and the stirrings of the Nightmare, and in accordance with the advice of Remulos, the followers of the Way gather on Yojamba Isle for the Rite of the Hunt. Several of them report unease among the trolls of Stranglethorn, and a sense of disquiet in the land and the jungle, emanating from the ancient, ruined city of Zul'Gurub.
After the Rite, the followers speak with the Zandalari troll Falthir, who explains that some of the Hakkari have found "a new mastah". He tells them that the Hakkari are performing dark rites in Zul'Gurub for unknown purposes, and asks them to go and investigate.

After it is decided that a trip into Zul'Gurub is the best course of action, Karael and Caliyen decide to go ahead and scout out the entrance and see what can be found.
They see the Trolls, and some disturbingly life-like statues. They also note that the Ruin is surrounded by hostile Lumber Mills, which would be best avoided.

On entering Zul'Gurub, the followers of the Way discover a beast, not native to the Dream but clearly connected with the Nightmare, which the Hakkari have managed to summon. They slay some of the trolls the creature had bound to its will, and finally corner and destroy the beast itself. The creature is physically tenuous, but manages to dominate the wills of Amplisa and Aldrannath. Aldrannath runs amok among the Kaldorei, injuring several before he regains his wits. Amplisa, over-eager to pursue and destroy the beast, throws herself into the rapidly-fading portal it had been trying to create.
Shanna Tenderleaf follows Amplisa into the half-completed, labyrinthine Nightmare portal, and manages to guide her to safety, but is herself lost. Shaken, the followers send out scouts to the Dream Portals, but find no sign of her there. The Cenarion Circle also has no news of her.
Anxious to recover their sister if they can, the followers travel to Wyrmrest Temple to beg the aid of the Dragons. The Bronze Emissary at Wyrmrest explains that Shanna was carried a few years backward in time in the chaos and confusion of the collapsing portal, and can be found sleeping peacefully by the side of Nordrassil. Surprisingly, the Emissary seems willing to help the Kaldorei find Shanna, in return for a small favour not yet fully explained...

Celegil and Caliyen meet a group of Orcs while walking around the forest. They decide to follow them and find out that they are headed to the Ruins of Stardust. Although the Orcs don't do much more than take a sample of water from the elemental invested lake, Celegil decides to open fire on them. Although they manage to hit a number of the Orcs with poisoned arrows, Celegil is hit by a mind spell and Caliyen has to drag her off to safety. Luckily, she recovers quickly.
The next day, Celegil and Caliyen meet the Druid Banthanor. He explains he heard of the Way by a number of his fellow druids which said he was 'just like that crackpot of the Way'. After a peaceful conversation, Banthanor agrees to become a member of the Way and will return to Astranaar in a few days to meet Elder Aldrannath.

Bronze Dragons send some of the followers of the Way on a small mission in the Caverns of Time, which also gives them the opportunity to rescue their sister Shanna Tenderleaf from certain destruction in the Battle of Mount Hyjal. The simple mission for the Dragons is apparently successful, and Shanna is brought back to Moonglade, dazed and confused, but well.
Some days later, Shandaril celebrates the Rite of Tranquility, and becomes a follower of the Way. A group of Draenei are permitted to observe the Rite, but are shocked and disgusted by what they see; the Kaldorei in turn are distracted and annoyed by their presence.
Karael tells the group about her encounter with Ancients in Felwood, and the strange mission they have given her. The Druids are puzzled and concerned, and Karael agrees to take the others to meet with these Ancients.

While Celegil is spending some time in Forest Song during her duty, she encounters the Draenei Armanor and two of his other followers. Still shocked by the events and bloodsletting a few days earlier, Armanor asks Celegil what the 'Way' of Malorne really is. After Celegil explains this to Armanor and his followers, they seem more understanding to the Kaldorei ways.
Moments later, after Celegil tells Armanor and the others about the war between the Kaldorei and the Orcs, Armanor wishes to do a patrol. Though irritated by the Draenei's lack of flexibility, she leads them against a small Orc patrol near Splintertree Outpost which they defeat before running back to Forest Song. There, Armanor promises he will talk with his fellow about what he has learned from Celegil.

The Elders of the Way gather in Moonglade to discuss Shanna Tenderleaf's ordeal; Aldrannath also shares his concerns about Celegil.
A few nights later, Karael takes several of the followers of the Way to meet the Ancients who sent her on her mission to hunt down Demons. They chide Aldrannath for his suspicions. Lawrauleth and the Druids are unable to find any taint in the hearts of the Ancients, and advise Karael to proceed cautiously with her mission.

As the Rite ends, Celegil expresses her own concern about the leadership in the Way and that she wishes to have more power. Aldrannath disagrees which causes her to become angered and an argument ensues.

On a random evening in Auberdine, Shandaril, Salabadon and Celegil meet to reflect the past days. As they talk, they see a Human female acting strangely. Troubled, the three Kaldorei follow her north of Auberdine to a deserted sandy beach. There the Human female meets two other similar shifty humans. As the three Kaldorei overhear the Humans talking they discover that they are trafficking some relics from the ruins further north.
The Kaldorei decide to charge them. Sadly, the Human female spots them and manages to get into a rowing boat along with the relics. This leaves the two Humans exposed to the Elves causing one of them to get shot and another running off..
Celegil chases one of the Humans alone and catches him. After interrogation, she kills him in cold blood and kicks the body into the sea which causes Shandaril to become angered. Salabadon in the meantime, patch up the Human that was shot so they can interrogate him. In the process, Celegil returns and joins the interrogation. The Human agrees to talk if the Kaldorei swear they won't kill him. This they do and they find out that the Human female was called Reeve and that they were working for a noble in Stormwind.
After this, Celegil breaks the oath and kills this Human as well. Salabadon frowns upon the First Ranger's actions and wishes them to at least transport this body back to Stormwind. With this, Celegil reluctantly agrees.

Caliyen reluctantly agrees to go to Stormwind and investigate the humans' interest in ancient Kaldorei artifacts. Banthanor decides to go with her, and Lawrauleth goes to consult with her sisters on the matter.
Amplisa, attending the Rite of the Hunt, reports dark dreams of the creature that was destroyed in Zul'Gurub; Tenderleaf, hearing of her Dream, has a vision of trolls enslaved by the Scourge to some dark power. They both make plans to travel to Zul'Drak with Celegil to investigate these portents.

Caliyen, Amplisa, Banthanor and Lawrauleth finally confront the surviving relic thief in Stormwind but Dergo Hugner, a respected human, stands firmly in her defence. The kaldorei take the difficult decision to abduct her, which the ruthless Amplisa and the huge human mercenary Derathon manage to accomplish after a violent struggle.
Wavering over the morality of hurting the girl to force her cooperation, the issue is decided for them when she attacks Caliyen with a razor blade and is beaten with boot and fist until she reveals that she was working for a Lady "Ruw-something" involved with the human church.
Shaken by the events of the night and the prospect of their imminent arrest, Amplisa decides to head on to Menethil to find transport to Northrend while the others quietly board a ship back to Kalimdor.
