Name:
Caliyen Starbreeze
Race and Class:
Night Elf Warrior
Observable traits:
Caliyen is very tall, her solid form and lack of obvious curves make this height neither intimidating nor particularly appealing. While not overtly clumsy, she seems to be lacking in some of the grace found naturally in most Kaldorei. Her hair is cut short and her face is fairly plain, besides a few marks of battle.
Family:
Caliyen is a Starbreeze of Darkshore, part of a family with a strong tradition of service in society and the sentinel army. Both of her elder sisters, Elissa and Serane, are sentinels, as was her mother before she lost an arm in an accident. Her father is also still alive although very eccentric, completing her close family.
Background:
Brought up on tales from her mother's sentinel career at a time when her elder sisters were just embarking on their own, the sentinel army seemed a firm choice to set her aspirations on as well. This was the focus of her childhood and adolescence, playing games of strength and stamina with others of her age while receiving the customary full instruction in Kaldorei history and culture amongst a myriad of other lessons taught to the children of the Night Elves.
While still considered too young to join the sentinels, Caliyen remained in Darkshore with her parents as both of her sisters and some of her elder friends saw action against the orcs encroaching on Ashenvale forest. As the fighting intensified, those at home doubled their training efforts, determined to be ready when they were needed.
In the subsequent demonic invasion, she was deemed unsuitable to take part in the defence of the World Tree, although her sister Serane was present. In the aftermath, Caliyen was finally accepted into the sentinel army among the replacements for the casualties they had suffered. In the five years that followed, it became clear that some form of mental strength was missing in Caliyen as she became increasingly unsure of herself. This came to a head in a clash with orcs in Felwood, resulting in the deaths of several sentinels and her convinced that she was unready for service with them.
Granted a release from service, she traveled to the Eastern Kingdoms with a childhood friend with a desire to see this new world. Naturally, she instead witnessed the corruption of her friend (as well as most of the hundreds of other elves making the trip) by the bizarre cultures of the humans, goblins and their ilk.
By chance, she was trapped in the city of Stormwind while visiting by the Necropolis attack that heralded the arrival of Naxxramas in the skies above Lordaeron. Stumbling onto the human paladin Gawain, she was swayed into joining The People's Militia and continued serving after the attack had subsided, until the death of Minetha Nightingale. Later returning to guard service in the Stormwind Night Watch under Lord Ebonhart, she discovered a talent for law-keeping that saw her rise quickly in responsibility as well as recognition. Caliyen was in fact the first Kaldorei to be allowed to join the now 'official' city guard under Lord Ebonhart and later it's second inception as the 'State Guard' under Lord Marshal Aurios.
In the six months between posts (the city guard was frequently disbanded and reorganised either by royal decree or force of the masses) she lead a small company of fighters working most notably in Silverpine Forest. During this time she met Celegil Moonwatcher and developed a strong friendship with the druid Shalandra Winddancer. She also entered into a relationship with the human Franze Huss, with whom she shared a similar outlook. While their partnership has lasted over a year already, it is unclear whether it can survive in the face of his mortal aging and the culture shock of Kaldorei society.
Returning to service in the city guard in the summer of this year, she was finally awarded the rank of captain (administrative) in the Alliance military. As disorder in the city of Stormwind grew, the guard came under more and more pressure and is soon to lapse into another reorganisation following the resignation of it's commander Xeineth Aurios. Caliyen left service on leave following breaking a leg in the line of duty and has since applied for a discharge.
Having experienced as much of the east as she would want to, Caliyen hopes to return to Kalimdor with a wealth of new experience behind her.
Personal notes:
At only a little over the age of two hundred, Caliyen is still naive in many ways. Her experiences in the Eastern Kingdoms may have imbued her with a false confidence, given that she has become accustomed to dealing with shorter-lived races and excelling with reasonable ease.
Naturally slightly awkward, her time away from mainstream Kaldorei society has led her to become nervous in the presence of venerable or important figures. Her previous fortunes in the sentinel army have instilled a deep-rooted anxiety about ever being able to succeed on the path taken by her elder sisters.
Rumours and reputation:
Having lived in two very different societies, Caliyen's reputation is polarised between them:
In Stormwind she has become a very recognisable face, a common feature in recent incarnations of the city guard and recognised as being effective in this role. She is generally considered honest and upright, while more ignorant or bigoted humans might refer to her as the 'model Kaldorei immigrant': hard-working, quiet and non-criminal.
At home in Auberdine, she is a much lesser known figure having been absent initially in Ashenvale and then the east for a total of eight years. She is considered something of a pariah, a 'humanised' elf who hasn't quite been swallowed up by that continent as most who traveled there have. Her family name is respectable and this redeems her a little in the eyes of some traditionalists, but within her family only Caliyen's relationships with Elissa and her father have remained unchanged by her time away.
Criminal record:
Like most young Kaldorei, she was never inclined toward any kind of crime while growing up. Internal files from her service as a guard show various complaints of violence and injustice, but this seems to be a common theme throughout the rosters of guards and all seem to have been largely dismissed. Alliance military records show she came under investigation following the death of Lord Ebonhart, but was cleared without charge.
